What to Expect: Paving

If you’re getting ready to pave your driveway, parking lot, or any other outdoor surface for the first time, you’re probably wondering what to expect. Paving is a significant investment; you’ll want to ensure it’s done right! This blog will answer some of the most common questions about paving.

How does paving work?

Asphalt combines minerals, a binder, and a filler that are then heated to create a strong, durable surface. Asphalt can be installed in various ways, such as by rolling, tamping, or spraying. Asphalt rolling is just as it sounds, rolling the asphalt onto the surface with a vibrating paver. Asphalt tamping is more common for small patch fills and is generally compressed manually with a tamper tool. Asphalt spraying is similar to airbrushing your home. A contractor sprays an adhesive and asphalt onto the ground in an even coat. It’s a popular choice for driveways and parking lots due to its strength and durability.

How long will it take to pave?

Depending on the job size, the paving process typically takes one to three days. During this time, no one should drive or park on it.

When will I park/drive on my new paved surface?

Once the asphalt is dry (typically 24 hours after the pour), it’s safe to drive and park on. However, there is a cure period (about one year) where you should monitor and restrict heavy vehicles from driving on your lot and vehicles from parking in one spot for an extended time. Driving too fast on the newly paved asphalt can also cause damage. If you need access to the area sooner than two weeks, Blackjack Paving can provide temporary pavement until the asphalt has cured.

How durable is asphalt?

Asphalt is one of the most durable surfaces available and can last for 10 to 20 years with proper maintenance. Seal coating will help keep it looking fresh and protect it from damage when applied every three years. You can expect your asphalt surface to look great and last for many years with good care!
